Wound care

Wound care involves medical interventions to heal a wound after injury. Specialized treatment is provided for wounds that are nonhealing or refuse to heal on their own. A vital aspect of treatment includes learning how to properly dress and care for a wound.

Advanced burn care is provided by a multidisciplinary team, including burn surgeons, physical therapists, occupational therapists, plastic surgeons and other medical professionals.

Diabetic ulcer treatment

If you have diabetes, it is common to develop foot ulcers as a result of vascular complications. To help you heal, we offer diabetic foot wound care as part of our diabetes program. Our wound specialists provide ulcer assessment, diabetic wound care and education to help you heal and prevent future foot ulcers.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)

Our hospitals were the first in central Virginia to offer HBOT, an advanced treatment for wound healing. Typically an outpatient treatment, HBOT involves breathing pure oxygen in a sealed, pressurized environment to help push more oxygen into your blood plasma. This promotes healing by enhancing the white blood cells' ability to fight infection and stimulating the growth of new blood vessels.

Wound care physical therapy

Depending on the type of wound you have, our physical therapists may collaborate with your wound doctor for your treatment. Physical therapists provide a range of wound services, including wound cleaning, debridement and application of dressings. They can also provide physical therapy to promote wound healing.
