Types of neurological care we provide

Our neurosurgeons work to improve the function of your brain. With diagnostic, surgical and nonsurgical services, we get you on the road to healthier living.

Neurovascular diagnostics

Our neurovascular team offers you full access to a wide range of advanced diagnostic imaging services. This includes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET) and electroencephalogram (EEG) testing.

We are also proud to offer you access to Henrico Doctors' Hospital, which is one of only 20 hospitals in the U.S. to offer an intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) suite. This assists in the removal of brain tumors and delivery of effective, advanced treatment for other neurological conditions.

Neuroradiology

Neuroradiology is a specialty within radiology. It uses neuroimaging to detect conditions in your nervous system, brain, spine and neck. Our board-certified neuroradiologists have advanced training in this type of imaging. They are adept at analyzing brain and spinal cord conditions and identifying abnormalities on tests.

Neurological treatments we offer

Different neurological conditions benefit from unique approaches. This means the right treatment for you may require expertise in various medical areas. So we may include other professionals, like rehabilitation therapists, pathologists and epileptologists to create your treatment plan.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS)

DBS can be used to treat a variety of brain and nervous system conditions, as well as movement disorders like Parkinson's disease, essential tremor and dystonia. Our neurosurgeons are equipped to perform both awake and asleep DBS.

DBS works by implanting a device that sends electrical signals to brain areas responsible for body movement. These electrical signals can help reduce symptoms such as tremors, slowness of movement, stiffness and difficulty walking.

Advanced DBS program

Our neurologists at Johnston-Willis Hospital have successfully performed thousands of these procedures in their advanced DBS program. While it is not a cure, DBS can reduce symptoms and can be customized to treat your changing health needs over time.

Focused ultrasound

Focused ultrasound is a new, advanced procedure that treats essential tremors, such as those that appear with Parkinson's disease. Incisionless and requiring no anesthesia, focused ultrasounds use low-energy sound waves to target the part of the brain that causes tremors. Many patients see a vast improvement and can return to a more active lifestyle after treatment. Johnston-Willis Hospital is proud to offer this painless procedure if you suffer from essential tremors that have not improved with medication.

Interventional neuroradiology

Interventional neuroradiology combines imaging technologies and minimally invasive procedures to take the next step in actually treating head, spine and neck conditions. Our interventional neuroradiologists and neurosurgeons have extensive knowledge and experience in safely performing these delicate procedures to deliver positive outcomes.

Neurosurgery

Neurosurgery is a procedure performed by expert teams using advanced techniques to precisely locate, treat or remove targets inside the brain or spinal cord. Our neurosurgeons work exclusively in neuroscience surgical suites designed to help them address conditions that at one time were inoperable.

Spine surgery

Both neurological and orthopedic conditions can result in a need for spine surgery. We employ experts in both areas — neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery — in our spine care services. Our surgeons can perform a variety of advanced spine surgeries, including pediatric spine surgery, spinal fusion and cervical disc surgery.

Stroke care

Our emergency care teams aim to exceed even the highest stroke care standards to ensure the best stroke care and stroke recovery care for you. With one neuro-endovascular radiologist and one neuro-endovascular surgeon in residence Johnston-Willis Hospital, we are the only healthcare network to offer neuro-endovascular procedures for stroke.

Trigeminal neuralgia treatment

Trigeminal neuralgia is a disorder that causes severe pain in one side of the face. Because this can also be a symptom of many other disorders, trigeminal neuralgia often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

We offer multiple treatment options for trigeminal neuralgia, including glycerol injection and microvascular decompression (a procedure that relieves pressure from a nerve).

Neuroscience intensive care units

Depending on your condition or procedure, we may need to transfer you to a spacious, private room within one of our neuroscience intensive care units (ICUs) or step-down units for your recovery. These units use advanced inpatient monitoring technology, which means you'll receive fast-responding, highly effective care and a quiet environment for healing.

Neurological rehabilitation and stroke recovery

At our hospitals, we begin your neurological or stroke rehabilitation in your room to help you heal. Our specialists use many forms of rehabilitation therapy, including physical, occupational and speech therapy, to help you regain as much function as possible.
