Primary care

Primary care refers to the day-to-day healthcare you receive from your doctor. A primary care physician provides annual checkups, vaccines, physicals, care for minor injuries and illnesses and also helps facilitate specialized healthcare needs.

Preventive care

Preventive medicine helps you maintain good health and is an important element of your primary healthcare. As part of this, your PCP can provide annual vaccinations for seasonal illnesses, such as the flu. They can also facilitate health screenings for certain conditions, including diabetes and cancer as well as high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

Types of primary care doctors

Different types of primary care doctors specialize in different areas of medicine and offer different services. Your age and medical needs will help determine which doctor is right for you.

Here is a quick reference guide to get you started:

  • Pediatricians specialize in the treatment of infants, children and adolescents, generally 19 years old and younger.
  • Family medicine specialists, also called family practitioners, treat a wide range of medical concerns for patients of all ages — from infancy through adulthood.
  • Internal medicine doctors, also called internists, typically care for adults. This includes adolescents, such as patients who are 16 or 18 years old and older.

Choosing the right family doctor

Building a trusting relationship with your PCP is one of the most important things you can do to optimize your health. Here are some questions you can ask when trying to choose a PCP:

  • Does the doctor invite me to be involved with my care?
  • How easy is it to reach my doctor?
  • Is the office in a convenient location?
  • Is the office taking new patients right away?
  • Will the doctor refer me to specialists for more focused care?
  • Do the office hours work with my schedule?
  • Can I schedule my visit online?
  • Can I pay my bill online?
