Uniting for mental health

Working together to support the mental health of Virginia's teachers and families.

Welcome to the HCA Virginia Mental Health Toolkit. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in six U.S. youth aged 6 - 17 experience a mental health disorder each year. Fifty percent of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24. One in five U.S. adults experience mental illness each year. One in twenty-five U.S. adults experience serious mental illness each year. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10 – 34.

Mental health issues in our homes and in our communities, particularly for our youth, are complex and challenging, but by joining together and through united effort, we can make a difference. This toolkit is intended to serve as a gateway to background, tips and tools, and resources that can help individuals, organizations, and communities learn more about mental health issues, and present a pathway for appropriate action based on an easy to follow framework of the “5 C’s), Collaboration, Conversation, Community, Care, and Connection. Please visit the links to each of the 5 C’s below to discover actions that you can take as an individual, organization, or community.
