Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center to expand emergency services in region with $37 million investment
Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center, part of HCA Virginia, today announced a more than $37 million investment in emergency services for the region including a new freestanding emergency room (FSER) in Stafford and an expansion and renovation of the hospital’s primary ER.
On Tuesday, the hospital received approval to build a new freestanding emergency room in Stafford, marking a major step forward in expanding access to emergency care. The 11,000-square-foot Stafford FSER represents a $21 million investment in the community and is expected to open by 2028 with construction set to kick off early next year.
The hospital has also been approved to move forward with a $16.2 million expansion and renovation of the hospital’s emergency room. The project will add 10 ER exam rooms, expanding capacity by 30 percent, and renovate the existing ER to create a better environment for patients and providers, adding approximately 5,400 square feet of new space and creating three triage bays.
“We are incredibly excited to be able to make this investment in emergency care to meet the needs of our growing community and bring the exceptional care that we offer closer to home for many patients,” said Ryan DeWeese, CEO of Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center. “These projects will improve the patient experience through more convenient access and shorter wait times allowing us to focus on the most complex, high-acuity needs.
Last year, HCA Healthcare saw 10 million emergency room visits and more than 613,000 of those were in Virginia. HCA Virginia is growing with those needs and has multiple freestanding ERs and urgent care centers in various stages of development.
Most recently, Reston Hospital Center broke ground on the Leesburg ER and Outpatient Imaging facility—Northern Virginia’s second HCA Virginia freestanding ER—expected to open by early fall. It is one of three of HCA Virginia’s freestanding ER projects advancing across Virginia this year, with two additional locations, Scott’s Walk ER and Chesterfield ER, planned to open in central Virginia in summer 2026.
“At HCA Virginia, we are focused on expanding access to high-quality care across the Commonwealth,” said Shaila Menees, chief development officer of HCA Healthcare Capital Division. “The “front doors” into our system are critical to supporting our full continuum of care and we are proud to be building a system that meets patients where they are.”
Once open, the Stafford FSER will offer:
- 11 emergency bays, including a trauma bay;
- advanced diagnostic imaging (CT, ultrasound, radiology);
- on-site laboratory services;
- a covered ambulance entrance.
Staffed by board-certified emergency physicians and approximately 40 clinical professionals, the emergency room will be equipped to treat high-acuity conditions such as cardiac arrest, stroke and severe injuries — delivering the same level of care found in hospital-based emergency departments.
The Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center ER expansion and renovation will address increased demand for emergency services in the region.
