HCA Virginia names 46 Patricia Frist Memorial Scholarship recipients
46 HCA colleague dependents received one-year scholarships to pursue higher education.
Richmond, VA — HCA Virginia has awarded 46 one-year scholarships, totaling $135,750, to HCA Healthcare colleague dependents. The merit-based scholarships support the educational goals of colleagues’ dependent children across HCA Virginia’s 14 hospitals. Established and funded by the HCA Healthcare Foundation, these scholarships empower eligible students to pursue post-secondary education.
"At HCA Healthcare, we not only care for our patients, but are deeply invested in our people through a number of programs," said Dr. William Lunn, president of HCA Healthcare Capital Division. "We are proud to help support the educational goals of our colleagues’ family members with the Patricia Frist Memorial Scholarship. Through this program, we are helping the next generation pursue and advance their careers."
The scholarship program was renamed the Patricia Frist Memorial Scholarship in 2021 to honor the late Patricia Frist, a longtime philanthropist in Nashville, Tennessee, and wife of HCA Healthcare co-founder Dr. Thomas Frist Jr. Through this program, eligible dependents of HCA Healthcare colleagues can receive merit-based higher education scholarships of up to $5,000 a year.
Mary Frances Bergeron, a Virginia Tech freshman studying biomedical engineering, is a recipient of the scholarship that allows Patricia Frist’s legacy to live on. "Being acknowledged by the Patricia Frist Memorial Scholarship for my hard work and future potential is incredibly motivating. It fills me with a sense of accomplishment and pride," said Bergeron. "This scholarship will make pursuing my educational goals more feasible and less stressful."
As a recipient of the Patricia Frist Memorial Scholarship, University of Virginia commerce major Schubin Chon is driven by a dual purpose. "This award supports my research to discover new ways to eliminate food shortages caused by pests. It also reaffirms my commitment to studying commerce. I hope to combine my expertise in population biology with commerce to benefit our society as a whole," said Chon. "In honoring Patricia Frist’s legacy, I am not only dedicated to being a passionate student but also an active and engaged member of my community. "
