Communities In Schools of Petersburg, Inc. (CIS-Petersburg) and HCA Virginia are excited to announce in collaboration with Petersburg City Public Schools an innovative partnership aimed at enhancing educational opportunities for middle school students interested in pursuing careers in the medical field. This initiative, made possible by a $25K grant from HCA Healthcare Capital Division Virginia, has led to the creation of a state-of-the-art medical classroom that provides hands-on learning experiences and early exposure to the various pathways available in healthcare careers.

The medical classroom is designed to simulate real-world medical environments, incorporating advanced medical technology, anatomy models and interactive learning tools. Through this partnership, students will engage in practical exercises and receive guidance from experienced healthcare professionals, creating an immersive learning experience that fosters curiosity and ambition.

“By collaborating with HCA Healthcare, we are committed to inspiring the next generation of medical professionals,” said Wanda Stewart, President/CEO at CIS-Petersburg. “Early exposure to medical careers can ignite passion and confidence in students, equipping them with the knowledge they need to pursue their aspirations in the healthcare field.”

Stewart expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with HCA Healthcare, emphasizing its role in fostering interest in medical careers among students and noted that Petersburg City Public Schools serves as an ideal environment for this initiative, aiming to inspire the next generation of medical professionals.

The medical classroom will also host guest lectures, workshops and mentorship opportunities, providing students with direct access to industry experts. This initiative aims to increase awareness of the diverse roles within the medical field, from medicine and nursing to medical technology and healthcare administration.

“Academic and community partnerships are a critical piece of our mission to care for and improve human life,” said Dr. Yvette Dorsey, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, HCA Virginia. “Strategic education assistance and training programs like this partnership with In Schools of Petersburg are essential to strengthening the healthcare workforce while allowing students the opportunity to explore their passions.”

“This partnership with HCA Virginia and CIS-Petersburg is a game-changer for our students,” said Petersburg City Public Schools Superintendent Yolonda Brown. “By bringing hands-on medical training into Vernon Johns Middle School, we are opening doors to futures in healthcare that many students may have never considered. This initiative will spark ambition, build confidence, and give our students the tools they need to see themselves as future doctors, nurses, and healthcare leaders. We are proud to partner in this powerful investment for our students.

A launch event for the medical classroom was held on Wednesday, April 23, where students, faculty and community members had the opportunity to tour the facility, engage in demonstrations and learn more about the impactful programs being offered.
