Emergency care

Emergency care is the treatment of unexpected, severe medical injuries or infections. It is typically delivered in an emergency room or an ambulance. Our emergency medicine physicians stabilize your condition as quickly as possible to prepare you for the next step of care or discharge.

Do I need the emergency department?

It can be hard to tell when something like chest pain is just passing discomfort or if it's a serious health condition like a heart attack. We offer some guidelines to help.

Symptoms that may require you to go to the ER

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you may want to call 911 or visit the ER:

  • Chest pain with other heart attack symptoms
  • Difficulty breathing that prevents speaking or lying down
  • Head injuries resulting in a loss of consciousness
  • Pronounced abdominal pain, especially with a fever
  • Severe nausea and vomiting from a cold or flu
  • Severe pain in your lower right side or back
