Recognizing heart attack and stroke symptoms
If you or a loved one is showing symptoms of a heart attack or stroke, it's crucial to seek medical attention immediately.
Heart attack
Chest pain is the most common indicator of a heart attack. If you are experiencing persistent chest pain accompanied by other symptoms, seek emergency medical treatment immediately.
Heart attacks may also include any of the following symptoms:
- Cold sweat
- Difficulty breathing
- Dizziness
- Jaw and back pain
- Nausea
- Paleness
- Palpitations
- Unexplained anxiety
- Weakness or fatigue
While the most common sign of a heart attack is chest pain and pressure, women are more likely to experience common symptoms such as jaw and back pain, nausea, vomiting and shortness of breath.
Stroke
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel carrying oxygen to the brain gets blocked or bursts. Symptoms of a stroke often come on suddenly and can include:
- Difficulty seeing in one or both eyes
- Intense headache
- Loss of balance or trouble walking
- Trouble understanding language
- Weakness or numbness in the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
