Understanding bariatric surgery
Bariatric surgery is the general term for a variety of surgical procedures used to decrease your weight and improve your overall health. Often referred to as "weight loss surgery," bariatric surgery is not a cosmetic procedure. It is a tool, not a cure, that our bariatric surgeons use to treat patients with morbid obesity (having a body mass index of 40 or greater). To make an informed decision, we provide resources you can use to educate yourself about the types, benefits and potential complications of the various bariatric surgery methods.
Minimally invasive bariatric procedures
Our bariatric surgeons use minimally invasive surgery — robotic surgery or laparoscopic procedures —resulting in less post-surgical pain, a shorter hospital stay, a lower risk of complications and a quicker return to your schedule. Surgical procedures we offer include:
Adjustable gastric banding (AGB)
In a laparoscopic gastric band procedure, your surgeon places an adjustable band around the top part of your stomach creating a smaller stomach pouch, which helps you feel full sooner with less food.
Gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y)
In this procedure, your surgeon staples your stomach into two parts, creating a smaller stomach pouch. Next, a portion of your small intestine is connected to the new stomach pouch for food to flow through helping you feel fuller and allowing your body to absorb fewer calories.
Sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve)
During gastric sleeve surgery, your bariatric surgeon removes part of your stomach to create a smaller, banana-shaped stomach. The smaller stomach area allows you to feel full with less food.
Revisional bariatric surgery
Our bariatric surgeons can perform revisional surgery to alter or repair a previous weight loss surgery. Some reasons this may be needed are poor weight loss, regaining weight or other complications.
