Chippenham and Henrico Doctors' Hospitals named among U.S. Top 50 cardiovascular hospitals

HCA Virginia’s Chippenham Hospital and Henrico Doctors’ Hospital were named among the nation’s top performing cardiovascular hospitals by PINC AI, the technology and services brand of Premier, Inc. and reported by Fortune. The annual Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals study focuses on short-term, acute care, nonfederal U.S. hospitals that treat a broad spectrum of cardiology patients.

The goal of the program is to deliver unbiased, guiding insights that can help healthcare organizations focus their improvement initiatives and move toward consistent, sustainable top performance. It includes patients requiring medical management, as well as those who receive invasive or surgical procedures. Because multiple measures are used, a hospital must provide all forms of cardiovascular care, including open heart surgery, to be included in the study.

HCA Virginia hospitals care for more hearts, veins, and arteries than any other health system in Central Virginia. Services at Chippenham include acute cardiac care, cardiothoracic surgery, comprehensive valve clinic, arrhythmia management, heart failure, aortic center of excellence, cardiac imaging, and cardiac rehabilitation. Henrico Doctors’ Hospital specializes in heart valve diagnosis and repair, as well as both traditional and minimally invasive surgery for complex and easily treatable conditions, including heart arrhythmia, heart attack, heart disease, heart failure, and vascular disease.

For the past two decades, the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study and Premier’s PINC AI 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals list has drawn upon public data sources to evaluate and benchmark the level of cardiovascular care across the country. This year’s ranking looked at 940 U.S. hospitals and assessed their performance based on metrics including clinical outcomes (inpatient mortality and complications as well as readmission and 30-day mortality rates), operational efficiency (average length and cost of stay), and patient experience.

Compared to peer hospitals, those in the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals list operated at lower cost and had better outcomes, recording significantly higher inpatient survival rates, fewer patients with complications, lower readmission rates and up to nearly $10,000 less in total costs per patient case. According to the study’s analysis, if all hospitals operated at the level of this year’s top performers, there could be 7,600 fewer deaths due to heart disease, 6,700 fewer bypass and angioplasty patients who suffer complications, and more than $1 billion in inpatient costs could have been saved for the 2024 study year.
